Artslam - Adecia Days 15 & 16

Augh, how’d I manage to get so far behind? I’ve mostly just been unexpectedly busy the last few days…

The first image is from earlier in the year, but I felt like it was a good starting direction for Adecian clothing. I feel semi-comfortable coming up with women’s clothing, but for some reason, I’m struggling much more with the men. I spent a couple mornings reading through a book I have on traditional clothing in various cultures through the world, which did help a bit, but I’m still at the phase of working through the bad designs on my way to finding what I want. (I actually have a small write-up I did for traditional gender role ideas in Adecia- but I will put that into a later post when I am exploring these designs more.)

Following that, some sketches I did the other day after a few scribbled studies based on images from the book. I actually have a couple more books I placed on hold that I’m waiting to be ready at the library, which should be more in-depth to the areas I’m focusing on specifically: namely Central America, but also South America. I want to develop a feel of clothing that doesn’t have the usual hallmarks of modern Western fashion that is so pervasive world-wide now. But at the same time, I want it to look as though these costumes have developed to a point on their own that fits in with the feel of the era. Which is… kind of a hard line to strike, because so much of our ideas of fashion are primarily based in Euro-centric designs?

I tried re-drawing my earlier drawings from memory and coloring them, but I feel these actually look less successful than the first wave. At any rate, it’s only one initial variant wave of many, and nothing set in stone. I want to do a bit more research and more studies before I continue working on these, though, so until I get those books, I switched to some other studies I’d been meaning to get around to.

ARTSLAM DAY 10: HORSES, HORSES, MORE HORSES

Taking a brief break from Usul and Ulir-related stuff to spruce up and slightly redesign the varkha - an ornery horselike animal that lives around the area and is primarily used as a mount by nearly every people in that region throughout its history.

Varkhas stand at around 13-15 hh, and generally resemble unholy bastard children of a Przewalski’s horse, a mountain goat, a muntjac deer, and a pronghorn. They are adept climbers, but mediocre runners - while the multiple hooftoes on their feet allow for good grip, they are not exactly awesome for going fast on flat ground.

They’re also more aggressive than horses, and it’s a goddamn miracle that these hellbeasts got domesticated in the first place.

The second page is just studies - a little foal, a skull, an a haphazardly photoshop-doctored archer, because mounted archers are my favourite thing to draw. There are also some notes on behavior and appearance scattered throughout the sketches, and I do not vouch for their legibility.

Page 3 deals with tack, and is largely an attempt at establishing cultural differences throughout accessories. Highlanders have always favored blankets, and the post-ice-age mountain folk tend towards tall saddles and carved masks that double as decoration and armor. I have not gotten a good grip on those yet - they all look kind of goofy, to be honest - but I think I got the basic idea down.

Still behind, but hey, at least I got my mojo back.

ArtSlam - CinnamonAlchemy: Day 18
It’s strange to have enjoyed sketching out something that was outside the comfort zone - unref’d full body people doing things other than standing there (kind of), two people in a shot interacting in some manner. Imagine that. Zack and Lexi are talking about stuff and things.

Day 14 - 17

Sadly I’ve been pushing myself a bit too much and ended up with some elbow and wrist soreness in my drawing arm. I’m going to have to downgrade my work to just pencil sketches for the rest of the month to give myself some extra rest on that. Digital art is a bi unforgiving with the horrible ways I sit in chairs.
BUT have a huge dump of pencil. I started a Fanart Friday, but want to actually finish the colors, so that will be sometime in the future until I can heal up.

-

Drew a bunch of Leerus today, kind of reevaluating him as a character and his core motives. Sure he’s super annoying, selfish and really angry, but that all really comes down to him being just a kid.

Leerus’ mom, and some kitchen doodles.

Last year I drew out and talked about living islands! This is the massive creature that makes up Tikall and his group’s island home. A big leafy dolphin like thing. She’s pink.

ARTSLAM DAY 9: LITERAL TROPHY WIFE
I am still eight days behind, but I’m getting back into the swing of things and I have the next couple of days off, so hopefully I’ll catch up SOON.
For now, feast your eyes on Usul and Ulir’s still nameless third wife, AKA Literal Trophy Wife, AKA Sansa Wife, AKA the one character in this beautiful trainwreck of a world that never fails to make me very sad.
Usul and Ulir were re-introduced to human society on the cusp of legal adulthood, and they spent the next five or six years making a name for themselves as Terrible Land Vikings and amassing enough pillaged goods and street cred to eventually court and marry the daughter of some renowned warrior within their commune. Becoming Officially Married Dudes™ and helping make a couple toothy hellspawn did not, however, stop their burning and pillaging career in its tracks. After an unspecified amount of time (i am fantastic at numbers and this is still very fresh shut up), they have officially punched their way close to the top of the totem pole, and began raiding further southwest with a warband or two of their own. This is also around the time they acquired their second wife - after enduring an again unspecified length of time of non-stop burning, pillaging, and wanton cannibalism, some local lord or chieftain went “GOOD GRIEF I WANT PEACE MARRY MY DAUGHTER YOU CAN HAVE ALL THIS SWEET CASH  AND ALSO YEARLY TRIBUTE JUST STOP”, and the twins ended up returning home with Yerige, whom I will paint at some point.
Sansa Wife/Literal Trophy Wife comes into play much later, but the long story short is that she was acquired in a way similar to Yerige, but at the point where Usul and Ulir approaching the peak of their political and military power and likely commanding an Actual Fake Mongol Horde as opposed to several dozen angry men with tiny axes on even angrier tiny horses with very big teeth. She is the daughter of some king to the west, she doesn’t speak the language of the mountain folk (lmfao names), and she is terrified of her husbands and kind of appalled by their culture. She probably entertained some Sansa-esque dreams of marrying some loaded and undoubtedly heroic dude and bearing him kids and just being a Lady in an ivory tower, but those dreams get crushed when feral child genghis khans roll in and her family haphazardly signs an unprofitable peace treaty, where one of the terms is the youngest daughter living a billion miles away as a glorified hostage and giving birth to several terrifying toothy ginger hellspawn.

ArtSlam - CinnamonAlchemy: Day 17

Well, this was more of a challenge given Alexis’s character design is much more new and… uncemented. Tried the turn and the bald test with her. I’m going to try this look out for now and see how it feels as I continue to think of her like this in Zack’s world. I’d also like to see how she’s received.

As I said, she plays a certain role in the plot and will have to make some choices of her own that could hold great weight for Zack’s future. And whether or not he lives at the end of the story, I suppose. Hmm.

Zack, Alexis, and Zack’s friend all start out thinking that things are all fun and games when the nasty antagonists come a-knocking… But, views kind of change whe people start dying and it’s your fault, and then your skin gets pulled back so some old, faulty wiring can be installed in your body. AWESOME.  Sometimes I wonder if I’ve made it at all known that Zack’s story isn’t a happy dating-the-girl-hilarity-ensues tale… :D
